Artist Statement:
My pastel and watercolor drawings are a reflection of my other works: pottery, photography and gardening. They are also an outcome of my contribution to life and life's contribution to me.
My work is dependent upon the clear contrast of light and shadow and the search for an overall view of atmosphere to capture its mood. It is a direct, quick and innocent response to the subjects using the flow of my senses and the values characteristic to soft pastels and watercolors respectively.
Once I select a subject, I observe it for several days to find a suitable time of day, color of pastel paper for pastels and the position of my physical state for watercolors. I draw and paint the subject quickly from life, directly applying color to capture the movement of the subject.
Background:
Born and educated in Tokyo, Japan, attended Waseda University and Institute Franco-Japonais de Tokyo, majoring in Art and French literature, I have been living in Canada since 1972 and later became a Canadian citizen.
Although I have been a potter as my main trade for the past thirty years with many awards including Canada Council for the Arts, I have been exercising my drawings in the form of clay and photography. At an early age, I had the opportunity of being exposed to several internationally known artists as well as museums and art galleries. I have received several awards in painting from early youth.
